Project

Copepod Swimming

Simulation of copepod swimming mechanics showing the jump behavior and flow structures generated during locomotion.

1 Challenge

Understanding the hydrodynamics of copepod escape maneuvers.

2 CFD Approach

Viscous flow calculations for kinematics corresponding to an escape maneuver. The animal deploys sequentially all major appendages: first the two antennules, followed by the tail, and then the legs.

3 Results

Instantaneous streamlines and pressure contours at the vertical plane of symmetry show the thrust generation.

4 Engineering Conclusion

The simulation reveals how copepods maximize hydrodynamic thrust during escape.
